Understanding the ecology of blue elderberry to inform landscape restoration in semiarid river corridors

September 10, 2019Pacific Agroecology Research Team

This research examines the ecology of blue elderberry (Sambucus nigra ssp. caerulea), a keystone species in California riparian ecosystems and the sole host plant for the federally threatened valley elderberry longhorn beetle.

Understanding the environmental factors that influence elderberry establishment, growth, and reproduction is essential for effective habitat restoration in semiarid river corridors throughout the Central Valley.
